Geothermal energy lies just under our feet directly and there is an abundance of it available. A few miles just below the surface of the earth, we can tap into this energy. The hot molten core of the earth heats the water on the surface, to produce energy, which is harnessed once it turns into steam. This steam is used to drive turbine engines so as to generate electricity. More research should be done on geothermal energy so we can tap into its resources and develop it more for use.

The waste that we produced is often disposed in landfill sites, which decomposes over time and so gives off methane. By using it before it gives off too methane which is damaging, we can create energy from it. It is mainly used as gas for fuel cells for use in standard gasoline generators.

Ethanol is a biofuel used as a substitute for gasoline. This alternative fuel is easy to make and process using such products as corn, grapes, sugar cane, wheat, wood cellulose and wood chips. It is still debatable as to whether it is economical as lots of arable land is required to grow the crops, and also concerns of the pollutants from use of this product. It is localised in some areas and technologies are still being refined for extraction and admixturing.

There is a lot of investment by entrepreneurs into Biodiesel energy which is created by many different plant oils such as palms, rapeseed, soybeans and sunflower oils. It is now competing with fossil fuels and many companies have shown a commercial interest as it is cleaner burning than oil based diesel and is environmentally friendly.

Atomic energy is being created by regenerating nuclear plants for a carbon free energy source with nuclear fission. A great amount of power can be generated which makes this type of energy very efficient. The concern from people is of the radioactive waste product of atomic energy, although there is very little it still takes hundreds of years to decay before it becomes harmless.

The Production of Ethanol



Fuel prices are always a concern. This has led to increasing interest in alternative energy such as wind, solar and biofuels. Even though some consider biofuel to be something new, biofuels have actually been produced by humans for many thousands of years. This is because biofuels are so easy to make. It’s possible to produce biofuels from any vegetable that contains a significant amount of sugar, or contains ingredients that are convertible into sugar, such as starch and cellulose. You could also create sugar from the starch in corn, however it will take longer in converting the starch.

If you ever wanted to know how biofuels are created, here’s a simple rundown:

1) Take your grain, for example corn or wheat, and grind it down until the starch is exposed.
2) Mix all of this with water.
3) Take this mass and cook it briefly, adding the enzymes that will convert the starch into sugar. This is a process known as hydrolysis.
4) Throw in some yeast, which will cause the fermentation you need to manufacture ethanol.
5) Separate the ethanol from the other materials with distillation.

And then you’re done! There are many websites currently on the internet that show ways to produce ethanol at home, and these are in fact accurate. Though it’s a lot of work to do this, and it’s not very cost or time effective. There is currently a great amount of research going on into the production methods of biofuels. There is research underway at the moment to try and find ways to produce ethanol from less costly sources than grains, namely the cellulose that’s found within these grains.

However, this is not easy. There are many more complex procedures that have to take place involving pretreatment and hydrolysis, before the fermentation required can occur. One of the major benefits of using different sources for the production of biofuels will be that food sources are not overly used, causing hunger problems in areas that may be susceptible to this.

Fermentation is caused by the organism known as yeast. Yeast is commonly known as a major ingredient in bread, it’s the ingredient that causes the bread to rise. This rising is caused by carbon dioxide gas. Now, yeast is an anaerobic organism, which means it can survive without oxygen. Yeast lives on sugar, same as humans, but it’s unable to consume all of the energy retained in the sugar. While energy is being absorbed and sugar partially digested by the yeast, the sugar is converted into both carbon dioxide and ethanol.

Unfortunately, we can’t just go ahead and make ethanol with our bread at home. We don’t have enough sugar to make a significant amount. Countries like Brazil, however, have been using biofuels for a long time due to their high production rates of sugar cane. Some commercial ethanol is produced from a byproduct of gasoline, but most comes from yeast. Corn is far more plentiful in America then sugar cane, so this is why it’s most often used, despite the conversion process being more complex and costly.

What Kind of Alternative Fuel Vehicles Are There?



At this point, there are three types of alternative fuel vehicles and we will talk a bit about all of them in the following article.

The first type and probably the most often seen one as well is the electric car. The electric car is fully electric, no petrol or diesel engine on board. The problem with these alternative fuel vehicles is that you run out of power in less than 100 miles and you need to keep it plugged in for the rest of the day to actually be able to use it again tomorrow. There is also the problem with the power of the electric car and the speed. The cheap ones that you can actually afford are extremely slow and if you want a faster one be prepared to pay at least 100000 dollars and expect the batteries to last even less, probably around 50 miles.

The hydrogen alternative fuel vehicles are also available, but they are not quite ready for the masses yet. The technology in these alternative fuel vehicles is even less reliable and effective than it is in the electric ones and there are no hydrogen gas stations yet, so the hydrogen alternative will have to wait for at least another decade.

The last type is the hybrid alternative fuel vehicles. This means that they also have a petrol engine that charges the batteries for the electric engine. The petrol engine also does the drive sometimes, especially when you accelerate to higher speeds or when you drive off from a standing start. Now, these cars are probably the most usable of all three types and because of that, they are already accepted as the first true alternative fuel vehicles that actually work. They are reasonably priced, efficient and you can actually use them.

However much the people of America may appreciate the need to switch over to alternate energy sources, it cannot become a reality unless the federal, state and local governments work in conjunction to make several mandatory programs. CanmetENERGY is currently studying methods such as combustion, gasification, and transesterification (the use of new and used vegetable oil) as methods of converting and utilizing biomass. They are also concocting methods for the transportation, pre-processing, and storage of biomass.

Methane, sometimes in the form of what is called landfill gas, is known as a greenhouse gas; however, Canada has begun to collect the gas emitted at landfills not only resulting in less harmful emission into the atmosphere, but providing a means of energy production as well.

The province of Nova Scotia makes use of biomass quite often. Over 100,000 homes in Nova Scotia use firewood for heat and a 22 megawatt co-generation plant can be found in Brooklyn in Hants County. This plant, along with two electricity-producing sawmills, pellet manufacturers, and greenhouses all use production waste to power the facilities.

Although the use of biomass as a renewable energy source is not as abundant as it once was in Canada, the process is under way to follow Nova Scotia’s lead and bring Canada back to prominence in the field of biomass.
