How Do We Solve the Fuel Crisis?



Gasoline prices have skyrocketed over the past few months. Economically, the escalation in gasoline prices is because it takes oil to make gasoline. The cost of fueling your car has put a serious in your pocketbook. Gas prices have leaped over the $4 per gallon. Our society is dependent on our ability to fill the gas tanks on our cars.

In economic terms, gas prices are inelastic. It means normal supply and demand does not apply. One or a few entities can raise the price as high as they want because they know we have to buy it. Normally, the price of a good or service is determined by supply and demand. If there is an over supply of a good, the price goes down. If there is a shortage of something, the price goes up. When you have a normal balance between supply and demand capitalism is at work.

The point where supply and demand meet is called “price equilibrium.” There is a balance between supply and demand and the price goods and services. When someone corners the market on an item that is a staple of everyday life, like gasoline, the consumer is in trouble. The supplier has a monopoly. We are forced to pay whatever price the controlling entity sets for the good. That is where we are right now on fuel prices.

When this situation has occurred in the past, it has predominately been a domestic issue. The railroads had that situation in the late 19th century and the government stepped in to change the things in favor of the average citizen. In more recent times, the government stepped in to split the company into smaller entities, with a more regional focus.

The current fuel crisis is not going to be so easy to solve. We need cooperation from countries that hate us just because we exist. (Speaking of which, whoever heard of a religion where you have to kill anyone not of the same faith?) The war in Iraq is not making us any friends. Its end may be a good place to start working on the fuel crisis. It would certainly be a good place to start.

Another option is to develop other sources of energy, moving us away from our oil dependence. We should follow Brazil’s lead and move toward ethanol as our primary energy source. As a nation we should be ashamed that we haven’t already done so. We don’t have to re-invent the wheel. Use the same models and strategies they used when they started their program.

Lastly, and most importantly, what if you are a single parent and you have to decide between $4 gasoline to get to work or food that night for your children. How would you decide?

High School Science Fair Projects – Topic Ideas For Winning Experiments



High school science fair projects can be on any number of topics, depending upon the science course being taken. In the high school years students are allowed to take more advanced biology, chemistry, Earth Science and in some cases, rudimentary physics and astronomy courses. The buzz word “green” has become increasingly popular in the last few years, and people all over the world are beginning to realize the importance of replacing the dependence on coal and oil with the independence of renewable energies. While some folks are still skeptical about global warming, science and obvious changes in the environment are making most countries take the threat very seriously.

One country that seems to be leading the way in the renewable energy revolution is the small island of Iceland. They have fully embraced geothermal energy and hydropower, and 82% of their primary energy consumption comes from renewable sources. The country has managed within one generation to ween itself from dependence on coal and oil to a system almost completely based on sustainable resources.

Another country leading the way to a greener planet is Sweden. Approximately 25% of Sweden’s energy consumption comes from biogas. Biogas is power that is created from sewage. In the Swedish city of Linkoping, all of the garbage trucks and buses run on biogas, and there’s even a biogas-powered train line! The government in Sweden has even converted confiscated alcohol into biofuel for green applications.

In 1973, the country of Denmark became independent of fossil fuel imports. Since that time, the country has continued to embrace green technologies, and now boasts the world’s first profitable offshore wind park. Over 20% of Denmark’s power consumption is derived from wind power, and that’s after exporting 90% of their wind production outside of the country. Denmark is also using solar power to run heating plants as well as other applications, and they are also working on using rapeseed oil as a new type of biofuel.

Costa Rica is one of many countries that is working to become the world’s first carbon-neutral country. They incorporate several green energies including geothermal, solar, wind and the burning of sugarcane waste. Their biggest source of clean energy is hydroelectricity, and more than 82% of Costa Rica’s energy is provided by its hydroelectric dams. A quarter of the nation of Costa Rica is also devoted to park preservation.

In the United States, the green revolution has faced opposition most notably from the giant oil companies. Americans are just now beginning to realize the very real threat that global warming poses, and many are now willing to look at alternative energy sources. In recent years, the U.S. has become the world’s fastest growing wind power market, and several major turbine manufacturing plants have either been opened or announced their intentions. The Hydrokinetic Energy Transfer System – Promising New Alternative Energy?



The same NASA developer who created a method to power robotic underwater vehicles have proposed a new technology aimed at converting ocean energy into electrical power. Water based electricity generation is nothing new. Hydroelectric power is a significant source of energy for many nations, as is evident from China’s ambitious dam projects.

Jack Jones and Yi Chao from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory invented a method for underwater devices to help power themselves. The technology involves using the differences in temperatures around them to create energy. This involves a phase change material which changes from a solid to a liquid when temperatures go from cold to warm. The pressure on the liquid is used to generate electricity, which helps charge the battery.

The researchers realize the high-pressure liquid could be applied on a larger scale. Eventually Jone and Chao along with Caltech proposed a system that would utilize fresh water in a closed cycle, so that there would be no harm to the environment in the process. As an added bonus, the design also “eliminates all submerged electrical components, which are subject to corrosion” says Jones. This is another added benefit of the system, as in conjunction with a low cost electrical generation system, could mean that this entire system could be developed at a lower budget, and be safer than the tidal generation system currently being used in Manhattan’s East River.

The system also allows energy to be generated on command, which would help meet peak usage times when energy demands are higher. Other environmental technologies do not operate in a similar fashion, and often produce energy at unpredictable times. The benefits of this are enormous, especially in the event that the traditional polluting methods of energy generation which help satiate demand during peak hours should ever be eliminated or banned.

Ultimately, the cost efficiency will be the main question. Will this technology become economically practical? Scientists at NASA claim that current research on that aspect is only in the beginning stages and can make no promises. Many such promising technologies are being put forward. With energy being such an important aspect of our economy, it has become vital for researchers such as these at NASA to get the proper funding and backing. In the midst of trillions being handed freely to bankers and homeowners who bought houses they couldn’t afford, less than 1% of it is headed towards promising projects such as this.
